This week we caught up with slam and Nicov to ask them a few questions.
Here is what they had to say 🙂

slam

Robo: Hello slam, Which of the new civs do you think is the most interesting in terms of what it adds to the meta game or changes the way you need to play the game?

Slam: Hello. I’m not completely familiar with all the civs. I think players are still constantly switching their choices trying to figure out what civ gives better advantages. For instance Indians are popular at first but now Malians are also being chosen. Also knowing the map will switch the decision as well. I will say Italians is probably the most interesting for water maps.

Robo: Are you happy with your performance in the AoE All-Stars League? Is there any match that stands out as being winnable that just slipped away from you?

Slam: No I haven’t been happy with my performance at all. Although I can’t be too hard on myself considering I didn’t practice on HD at all and only really played it for tourney matches. There are many many games where I put myself in the advantage mid game but somewhere it just slips. I think a recent one would be being the daut or slam castle on the golden hill one. I just simply needed to bring 5 more vills to finish it in time.

Robo: DauT chose Malians twice against you this week on open land maps, was this unexpected and what are your thoughts on why he has chosen them so often?

Slam: I think I saw him choose it vs someone else beforehand so it wasn’t too unexpected. Malians seem to be very strong with the advantage of having buildings cost less wood. This could possibly benefit you much quicker in earlier game compared to indians.

Robo: Do you have any inside knowledge from TyRanT HQ about Jordan23’s return? Do you think he will play in any future teamgame tournaments with you guys?

Slam: I don’t have any inside knowledge unfortunately. If he returned I’m sure he would play in team games with TyRanT.

Robo: Chris, Ra and Hera have recently returned to AoC and signed up for Nations Cup, how well prepared will they be for Nations Cup? What are your team goals, Second place like last NC?

Slam: At the moment I think most of team Canada is not prepared. This time around, compared to last NC, many of us seem busy with work or interested in something else. I do believe after we play one round together we will start taking things more seriously, atleast I hope. The interest is still there from all of us – now it’s just finding the time. Our goal would be to win ofcourse. But if we were to hit 2nd place again (without practice) that would be a great goal as well lol

Robo: Is there anything you would like to see done differently in tournaments, for example, more variety in maps, or civ restrictions?

Slam: I don’t think much needs to be changed in my opinion, atleast for something like Nations Cup. What’s most important apart from variation in settings is getting as many players back into Aoc and more teams playing. I think we are all super excited to play AND watch NC whether there are huge changes or none. I think nerfing the sling was probably the most important change. As for map variety or civ restrictions.. that’s not too much of an issue for me.

Robo: Thanks for joining me, any final words?

Slam: Just want to say thanks to the sponsor, those behind the scenes and organizers. Also a thanks to those such as yourself robo that need to keep players like me in check for scheduling and keeping up to date with things.   slamSorry

Nicov

Robo: Welcome Nicov. Which of the new civs do you think is the most interesting in terms of what it adds to the meta game or changes the way you need to play the game?

Nicov: Hello. One of my favourites civs are Incas, because they have very dangerous early feudal rush, eagles in castle/imperial age to counter archers, slingers to counter infantry, and kamayuk to counter any cavarly unit. Indians are a very safe choice because the cheaper villagers in dark-feudal age allows you to do nearly any strat. And of course, the camels are insane. Ethiopians are another great one since the economic bonus and higher rate of fire of archers make them pretty tough to counter (let’s not forget the free pikemen-halbs upgrade).

Robo: Initially you were picking Indians a lot for open maps, but in recent weeks you have also played as Incas and mayans. Why the change?

Nicov: I was going for indians because, as I said, they are a very “safe” civ. But as you can see throughout the league that civ has been defeated by celts, mayans, incas, ehiopians, etc. They are not unbeatable as we all thought the first time. Incas is a civ I like a lot. And I picked mayans vs Viper after figuring out that they are pretty much as strong as in aoc. I had something planned but unfortunately I couldn’t make it at all since my map was some kind of Atacama and I had no restart left. It’s nice to see that in ara (or other land maps) we have a larger pool of strong civs to be picked, unlike normal aoc in which azt is clearly the best and picked 99% of the times in tournaments.

Robo: Is there anything you would like to see done differently in tournaments, for example, more variety in maps, or civ restrictions?

Nicov: This is kind of a personal choice. There are several maps I’d like to see in future HD tournaments. Most of EGC balance patch tournament’s maps (sand maze, slippery springs, duopoly are good examples). Also Regicide Fortress. And I’d also like to see migration removed and put Islands or Continental instead. Migration italians war is just as boring as Migration Vikings war in aoc ^^. There are other nice amounts of maps I’d feel happy playing but I can’t recall which ones atm.
And yes, I’d like to see civs restriction as well. As we have had in past tournaments. It added a lot of fun and strategy.

Robo: A number of old Argentina players (Juan, Patin, Garyy) have signed up for Nations Cup, after not playing for a while, how well prepared will they be for Nations Cup? What are your team goals, top 8 like last NC?

Nicov: Honestly we don’t think Gary will be able to play since he has no time for aoc. We signed him up just for case. Juan also has said that he won’t be playing since he is not interested in aoc anymore, but we signed him up hoping that he’ll change his mind after qualification stage and then decide to play with us. Fedex became active 1-2 months ago after a long time of some sort of retirement. He is still rusty but we know he’ll get in shape very soon. Patin is playing nearly everyday and I think he’ll do good throughout the tournament. As for goals we don’t expect to make it to 3rd place as in NC 2014, but we are looking to get into top8 like in 2015. Anything better is welcome 😀

Robo: Are you happy with your performance in the AoE All-Stars League? Is there any match that stands out as being winnable that just slipped away from you?

Nicov: Not really, I expected to do much better than this. I feel I have thrown way too many games so far but i have decided not to think about them anymore and just try to win the last round in order to get 4º place. For future tournaments I’ll try to fix some mistakes pattern that I have shown during this league and also try to figure out how to keep my mind cold since I have lost my (very little) patience pretty quick in several games (mostly when I feel the map generation has put me in some tough situation).

Robo: thanks for your time! Is there any final words you would like to say?

Nicov: Just thanks to Escape Staff for giving us the chance of playing such entertaining tournaments. I enjoy these HD games much more than standard aoc. Therefore if there are more tournaments comings (I strongly hope so!) I’ll be probably taking part of them as long as I’m available. Big thanks to everyone who cheers for me in tournaments or casual fun games. And also thanks to you for the interview!
